HISTORIC ROOFING MATERIALS IN TEXAS

A Look at Historic Roofing Materials in Texas

The materials and techniques companies use today in roof replacement and everyday residential roofing resulted from historic advances made since the beginning of civilization. Before we were able to mass produce shingles, humans had to build roofs out of whatever they could find.

Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal would like to take a second to go a little in-depth into each one of these historic types of roofs that led to the modern roof. Know a bit of history behind all of these different styles to see how far roofing has come.

What are Texas Roof Rats (and how can I prevent them)?

A roof rat is a black rat that climbs that live in your attic. A standard roof rat’s size is 13 to 18 inches long. Some roof rats can also weigh up to 9 ounces.

They are excellent climbers and can get in through any opening. That includes any damaged roofs that may have open holes in the shingles.

If you find a roof rat, act fast. More roof problems could happen by more rats infiltrating buildings. Shingles, tiling, and more could be eliminated by this type of pest.

Types of Roof Shingles

Over the years, Ja-Mar has dealt with many different roofing shingles types. Each shingle serves the same function of protection your home from the elements. However, they do it in vastly different ways.

Here are just a few of the types we have seen while in the field.

Roof Damage From the Texas Sun

Your roof is locked in a constant battle with the sun. While rain, snow, and hail damage can wreck your roof, the one element that is always wearing your roof away is the sun. The heat and radiation cause the roof to fall apart over time. Without the proper knowledge, summer maintenance of your roof can feel like an uphill battle.

Hail Damage to your Austin Roof – What You Need To Know

Hail damage often presents itself as small dips or breaks in a roof. The size of all these things can vary and fall completely at random. Even if you do not see indentations on the shingles themselves, you may still find proof elsewhere. If you find depressions in gutters, siding, skylights, or chimney caps, it may be worth taking a closer look at the roof. Not having visible proof of hail damage doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Should I Replace My Roof?

Replacing your roof can be a tough decision. On the one hand, you might not want to replace something that could be remedied with a repair job. Using Your Roof to Cool Your Home

During a Texas summer, attic temperatures can skyrocket as high as 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun can also heat up your entire house as it is beating down, with heat coming through the windows and leaking in from the attic. Your first instinct might be to crank up the air conditioning, but did you know that your roof can actually be an amazing resource when it comes to keeping home temperatures enjoyable?
